Why 941 Action?
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans have fought long and hard for full equality. They deserve our support.
- We’re their sisters and brothers, parents and children, friends, neighbors, and colleagues.
- We’re outraged by the inequities they face. We know that when some Americans have fewer rights than others, we’re all diminished.
- We’re committed to speaking out to achieve fairness and justice for all.
Why now?
Despite recent signs of progress, the LGBT community still lacks many of the basic rights that straight citizens take for granted.
- At the same time that we celebrate marriage equality in some states, we can’t ignore the fact that 31 states have rejected marriage equality by referendum.
- And while we may feel hopeful about poll results showing less prejudice, we’re horrified that teens are still committing suicide rather than continue to endure homophobic taunting and abuse.
A brighter future appears to be coming, but it’s up to us to hasten its arrival.
- As straight allies, we’re ready, willing, and able to stand with the LGBT community.
- We already recognize that this struggle isn’t about “LGBT rights,” but rather about basic human rights to which everyone should be entitled.
Straight allies express broad support for equality. The challenge for 941 Action is simply to provide the tools for them to voice their support in the most effective way.
